Scott Snyder writing technique:

1. Story about this character’s childhood, told in first person.

2. Something scary in media res, preferably while the story is being told.

3. People fight each other.

4. Remember that story about this character’s childhood? Boom, it gets a meaningful refrain. Yeah, that was planned from the beginning. Your mind is blown.
